09/17/13: Northwards to Rome

After 3 great days & nights in Sorrento it was time to bid farewell to the peninsula today & travel north towards Rome.
Along the way, in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, we made our first sightseeing stop of the day - to visit ancient Herculaneum, the less-well-know but better preserved sister city of Pompeii, that was destroyed on the same fateful day in 79AD when Vesuvius erupted.

After a late afternoon arrival in Rome we just had time to drop our bags before driving on to the Villa Borghese, home to the superb art collection of the Galleria Borghese.
After 2 hours of admiring classical, Renaissance & Baroque artworks, we strolled through the Borghese Gardens on our way to dinner.

First there was time to visit the famous Trevi Fountain, & of course to throw our coins into the water to ensure we come back to the Eternal City!

Dinner was in the great 'Little Orange"restaurant in a tiny street underneath the Quirinale Palace, after which we strolled back to our hotel, a great end to the day.
