09/15/13: The Fabled Isle of Capri

We took a full-day excursion to the legendary island of Capri today, departing after breakfast (with a view of mainland Europe's only active volcano, Mount Vesuvius!) for the port of Sorrento.

From Sorrento we sailed aboard a fast boat to Capri, which lies off the coast of the Sorrentine peninsula.  After arrival in the port of Marina Grande we took the funicular (cog railway) to the town of Capri, nestled atop the mountain island.  A short walk through the town's narrow streets of fashionable stores revealed spectacular views of the Faraglioni rocks & the cliffs of Capri's south coast.

There was free time to explore the town or just to get lost in its narrow streets!  We regrouped after lunch to ride the funicular back down to Marina Grande in time to meet our personal boat captain Antonio & to board our 'lancia', a traditional boat of Capri, for a 3 hour circumnavigation of the island.

Along the way we stopped to await a chance to board small boats & squeeze into the tiny entrance of the famed Blue Grotto to experience its azzure glow, created by the sunlight reflecting off the limestone floor of the cavern.

Back onboard with Antonio we continued our cruise around the island, stopping to swim in the blue-green sea & into one of its many grottoes.

Throughout the afternoon we saw luxury villas atop the cliffs, beautiful views at every turn, & even sailed through & around the Faraglioni rocks.  We even toasted our birthday boy!  It was a great afternoon & the perfect end to our day on Capri, bringing us into port just in time to catch our sailing back to Sorrento & then our hotel shuttle bus 'home' ahead of a free evening.
