09/14/13: Crossing the Straits of Messina & the Road to Sorrento

Sadly it was time to bid farewell to Sicily this morning, as we boarded our bus for the longest journey of our tour - all the way from Taormina to Sorrento.
After an hour we had reached Messina & were driving onto a ferry for the short but eventful crossing of the Straits of Messina, almost losing one of our number to a broken door lock!

Throughout the morning & afternoon we traveled northwards, up the toe, foot & then shin of Italy, with a lunch stop along the way.
In the late afternoon we arrived on the Sorrento peninsula, where our route took us high into the mountains along winding roads with precipitous views & interesting sights along the way - such as this herd of goats & the tomato truck ahead.

Our late afternoon sightseeing stop was in the beautiful village of Ravello, high above Amalfi on the Amalfi Coast.  We stopped for an hours, just long enough for everyone to take a quick look at one of the two famous villas in the village:  the Villa Rufallo & the Villa Cimbrone, both complete with stunning gardens & sensational views over the coast.

Finally we arrived at our hotel, just in time for dinner on the terrace with more superb views over the coast, this time over the Bay of Naples.
