09/11/13: The Road to Taormina - Agrigento & the Villa Romana

It was time to bid farewell (or perhaps “Arrivederci”?) to Palermo this morning, as we began our journey towards Taormina on Sicily’s west coast.
Our first stop, after a 2.5 hour drive, was Agrigento’s famed ‘Valley of the Temples’.  Our local expert Sara explained the history of the Greek era to us & pointed out details such as the Greeks’ incredible engineering & design prowess.  During the tour we visited 4 of the 10 temples found in the area, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
From Agrigento we traveled onwards to Piazza Armerina’s Villa Romana, a Roman villa destroyed in a landslide that simultaneously preserved its incredible mosaic floors, complete with images of hunting, children playing & even girls in bikinis!
Our final drive of the day took us to our hotel overlooking the sea north of Taormina.
Dinner this evening was in the center of Taormina, in the appropriately named ‘Viccolo Stretto’ (narrow alley) restaurant!
